The seminar is being organised as a contribution to the United Nations' Year for Human Rights on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

The following representatives of civil society in Latin America will address the seminar:

MARIA MORALES, member of CONAVIGUA, the human rights organization of the indigenous widows of war in Guatemala;

EMILIO ALVAREZ ICAZA, Director of the Christian-oriented National Center for Social Communication CENCOS and leading member of the human rights organization Alianza Civica in Mexico;

VIRGINIA HERNANDEZ, leading member of COMUTRAS, a womens' organisation of workers in the Free-Production-Zones of El Salvador;

JOAO STEDILE, leading member of the landless organisation MST (Movimiento Sem Terra) in Brazil.

The following representatives of the permanent missions to the UN and ambassadors have also kindly agreed to address the meeting:
