RELIGION AND SOCIETY

In co-operation with the University of Innsbruck (Austria), the Foundation for Sciences and Arts (Istanbul), and the Inter-cultural Dialogue Platform (Istanbul), the International Progress organized an interdisciplinary research seminar on "Religion and Society." Special lecture meetings and roundtable discussions were held in the period March-June 2011 in Innsbruck (Austria) and in the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Mardin and Ankara. Among the participants were professors and students from Austria, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, and the United States of America. Prof. Mohamed Andaloussi (Director of the Dept. of Philosophy, University of Moulay Ismaïl, Meknès, Morocco) delivered a guest lecture at the University of Innsbruck. On 7 May, a special seminar was held in Istanbul on "Religion, State and Society in Turkey." In the city of Mardin, the participants met, among others, with the Syrian-Orthodox Metropolitan, H.E. Archbishop Filuksinos Saliba Özmen, and with the Governor of the Province of Mardin, Turhan Ayvaz. Roundtable discussions were held at Bilkent University and at Hacettepe University in Ankara, where the President of the I.P.O. delivered a lecture on "Secularism and the Politics of Religion in Europe." Prof. Türkkaya Ataöv (former Director of the Dept. of International Relations at the University of Ankara, Turkey) delivered a special lecture on "Islam, Society and Science." On 21 June a panel discussion was organized at the University of Innsbruck on the topic "Islam in Austria" with speakers from Austria, Morocco, Pakistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

 

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

  • Conclusion of the research project on Security Council reform: In January 2011 the I.P.O. published the research paper by Hans Köchler on "The Security Council as Administrator of Justice?" (see above).

  • On 18 November 2011 the President of the I.P.O. delivered a special lecture on "The Dilemma of Security Council Reform" at the MEDays 2011 International Conference "The South in Global Governance" in Tangier, Morocco.

  • On 26 March 2011 the International Progress Organization sent a Memorandum to the United Nations Security Council concerning the use of force against Libya (see below).

 

DIALOGUE OF CIVILIZATIONS

From 7 to 9 April 2011 the I.P.O. participated in the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku, Azerbaijan. The President of the I.P.O. delivered a special lecture on "The Philosophy of Dialogue and the Challenges of Multiculturalism."

From 29 to 30 May 2011 the I.P.O. participated in the International Conference "Integration and Identity in the Global Society - an Invitation to Dialogue," which was jointly organized by the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations," Petersburger Dialog and Deutsch-Russisches Forum in Berlin, Germany. The President of the I.P.O. delivered a lecture on "The Dilemma between Unity and Diversity: Remarks on Contradictions and Misunderstandings in the European Debate on the Multicultural Society."

From 6 to 9 October 2011 the I.P.O. participated in the annual conference of the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations" in Rhodes, Greece. The President of the I.P.O. acted, together with Prof. Fred Dallmayr (Notre Dame University, USA), as co-moderator of Panel 2 on "The Dialogue Model of International Relations."

From 11 to 13 December 2011 the President of the I.P.O. participated in the 4th Annual Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in Doha, Qatar. He delivered a lecture on "Politics and Cultural Diversity: An Integrative Approach" in the Special Session "A New Agenda for Living Together - Changing the Narrative on Dealing with Differences."

On 3 March 2011, the President of the I.P.O. attended at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna, Austria, the ceremony in honour of Vladimir Yakunin, President of the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations," recipient of the Grand Decoration of Honour with Star of the Republic of Austria. The International Progress Organization participated in the meetings of the International Co-ordinating Committee (ICC) of the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations" in Vienna, Austria (22 January 2011), Berlin, Germany (29 May 2011), and Moscow, Russia (5 September 2011).

 

"ARAB SPRING"

  • On 21 February 2011 the President of the I.P.O. was guest in the live talk show "Inside Story" of Al-Jazeera on the theme "Libya: Ready for civil war?"

  • On 26 March 2011 the International Progress Organization issued a Memorandum on Security Council resolution 1973 (2011) and its implementation by a “coalition of the willing” under the leadership of the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which was addressed to the UN Security Council.

  • On 4 April 2011 the President of the I.P.O. gave an interview to the Moroccan daily Al-Ahdath al-Maghribiya.

  • On 19 April 2011 the President of the I.P.O. gave an interview to the Moroccan daily Libération.

  • On 22 June 2011 the President of the I.P.O. gave an interview to the Swiss newspaper Zeit-Fragen ("Current Matters").

 

NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Non-aligned Movement in Belgrade (Yugoslavia), the President of the I.P.O. gave an interview to Radio Student (Ljubljana, Slovenia) (9 September 2011). He has also written the entry "Non-aligned Movement" for the Encyclopedia of Global Studies (SAGE Publications, USA).

 

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE

  • 20 May 2011: Lecture by the President of the I.P.O. at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands, on "The Security Council and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon."

  • 5 September 2011: Lecture by the President of the I.P.O. on "The Dilemma of International Criminal Justice" (inaugural lecture of the Geopolitical Lecture Series at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Moscow, Russia).

  • 16 November 2011: Launching of the Arabic edition of "Global Justice or Global Revenge?" at the University of Meknès in Morocco (with a lecture by Mohamed Jalid).

  • 8 December 2011: Lecture by the President of the I.P.O. on "The Libyan Conflict and the Instrumentalization of the International Criminal Court" at the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation" in Paris, France.

THE QUESTION OF PALESTINE

At the invitation of the Center for Global Studies of the Foundation for Sciences and Arts (BISAV), the President of the I.P.O. delivered on 26 February 2011 a public lecture in Istanbul, Turkey, on the history and legal aspects of the Jerusalem question.

On 29 November 2011 the International Progress Organization, on behalf of the network of non-governmental organizations on the question of Palestine, delivered a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The meeting was organized at the United Nations Office at Vienna by the United Nations Committee for the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

Within the framework of the I.P.O.'s activities, Prof. Hans Koechler undertook information visits to Vietnam (15-19 February 2011), to Croatia and Montenegro (8-12 June 2011), and to the Autonomous Republic of Adjara in Georgia (17-20 August 2011).

CO-OPERATION WITH RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS

The International Progress Organization agreed to co-operate with the Centre for Dialogue of La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, on issues of peace in the Middle East.

 

INTERNSHIP

Mr. Ethan Schulz (Bethany Lutheran College, Minnesota, USA) served as intern at the head office of the I.P.O. in Vienna.
