The medal was issued in 1980 by the Armenian Academy of Philosophy to commemorate the 1500^th anniversary of the birth of David Anacht (David the Invincible).

The sobriquet “Invincible” refers to his intellectual skill in debates with his contenders. He was born in the district of Harq, Taron, in Armenia, educated in Athens, and was a pupil of Olympiodoros at the school of Alexandria. Among his writings are Panegyric on the Cross, Rules of Philosophy, Instructions to Rhetors, Definition of Philosophy, Exegesis of Aristotle, and a translation of The Grammar of Denys the Thracian.

In June 2009 the medal was awarded to Professor Hans Köchler.
